PreventionP264 Wash hands thoroughly after handling. P270 Do not eat, drink, or smoke when using. P273 Avoid release to the environment. P280 Wear protective gloves and eye and face protection.
ResponseP301+P312 IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor if you feel unwell. P330 Rinse mouth. P305+P351+P338 IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. P310 Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor. P391 Collect spillage.
Storage / disposalP501 Dispose of contents and container per local rules. Do not pour plating baths down household drains.
Other hazardsCopper sulfate solutions are acidic. Dust irritates the nose and throat. Conductive paint can irritate eyes and skin and is not a flammable liquid. Anode edges may be sharp. The USB power supply and female extension cable are electrical articles. Keep them dry and outside the bath. Do not immerse the supply, the USB connector, or the cable.

Section 3 — Composition / information on ingredients

Kit of chemicals and articles. The hazardous chemical that sets the kit classification is copper sulfate pentahydrate.

This kit includes the USB power supply and USB female extension cable. The buyer supplies distilled water, safety glasses, and polishing tools. PrintPlating does not pack sulfuric acid, battery acid, or batteries.

Section 4 — First-aid measures

Provide this sheet and PP-SDS-CUSO4-001 to medical personnel. Copper salts can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain if swallowed, and eye pain and blurred vision on contact.

Section 5 — Fire-fighting measures

Copper sulfate is not flammable. The conductive paint is water-based and is not expected to sustain a fire as a liquid; the dried film can char. Use water, foam, CO2, or dry chemical for the surrounding fire. Thermal decomposition of the sulfate may emit sulfur oxides and copper oxides. Firefighters should use protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. Keep runoff out of drains.

Section 6 — Accidental release measures

Keep people and pets away. Wear gloves and splash goggles. For sulfate crystals, avoid dust; sweep or vacuum into a labeled container and do not wash into sewers or surface water. For paint, wipe with inert absorbent and collect washings in the same container. Do not flush either material to a household drain.

Section 7 — Handling and storage

Adult workshop use. Do not get sulfate in the eyes. Do not breathe sulfate dust or paint mist. Wash hands before food. Keep the sulfate bag sealed and dry. Do not freeze the paint. Store the kit upright, away from children, pets, food, and reducing agents. Do not combine leftovers into unlabeled bottles. Keep the USB power supply and female extension cable outside the jar. Do not immerse the supply, the USB connector, or the cable, and do not handle the supply with wet hands.

Section 8 — Exposure controls / personal protection

ComponentLimit
Copper sulfate (as copper dusts and mists)OSHA PEL 1 mg/m3; copper fume 0.1 mg/m3. ACGIH TLV 1 mg/m3 dusts and mists; 0.2 mg/m3 fume.
Carbon black in the paint (CAS 1333-86-4)OSHA PEL 3.5 mg/m3 TWA. Applies to airborne dust, not to wet brush application.
Graphite in the paint (CAS 7782-42-5), respirableOSHA PEL 5 mg/m3 respirable fraction; ACGIH TLV 2 mg/m3 respirable.

PPE for the kit: chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, ventilation, and eyewash access. Use a dust mask or P100 if scooping sulfate or sanding dried paint. Do not eat or drink in the plating area.

Section 9 — Physical and chemical properties

ComponentAppearanceNotes
Copper sulfate pentahydrateBlue crystalsOdorless. pH about 3.5–4.5 at 50 g/L. Freely soluble in water. Not flammable. Density about 2.28 g/cm3.
Conductive paintOpaque black / dark gray liquidWater-based. Flash point not applicable (not a flammable liquid). Relative density about 1.1–1.4.
Anodes and wireSolid copper metalArticle as packed.
USB power supply and extension cableElectrical articlesKeep dry. Not a chemical mixture.

Section 10 — Stability and reactivity

Stable in the sealed kit. Keep the sulfate dry. Do not freeze the paint. Sulfate is incompatible with reducing agents such as hydroxylamine and hydrazine, and with household drain cleaners or bleach. Do not mix the paint into the plating bath except as the guide describes for coating a part. Hazardous decomposition if burned: sulfur oxides, copper oxides, and smoke from the paint binder.

Section 11 — Toxicological information

Kit classification follows copper sulfate pentahydrate: harmful if swallowed (oral ATE about 481 mg/kg), causes serious eye damage. Dust irritates the respiratory tract. The conductive paint mixture may irritate eyes and skin; carbon black is IARC Group 2B as unbound respirable particles, and in the paint it is bound in a wet film. The kit is not a children’s product and is not intended for ingestion or inhalation.

Section 12 — Ecological information

Copper sulfate is very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H410). Do not release crystals, spent plating baths, or paint washings to storm drains, septic systems, soil, or surface water. Collect spills.

Section 13 — Disposal considerations

Unused sulfate and copper-bearing baths are disposed as hazardous waste or metal-bearing wastewater under local rules. Do not dump baths in household drains. Paint leftovers and contaminated rags follow local paint-waste rules. Dried paint on a finished part is an article on that part. A single kit is far below the 10 lb CERCLA reportable quantity for cupric sulfate; do not aggregate waste carelessly.

Section 14 — Transport information

The Electroplating Kit with USB Power Supply is regulated as a dangerous good because it contains copper sulfate pentahydrate. Classify the kit under the entry below. The conductive paint is a water-based liquid and is not a flammable liquid. The copper anodes, wire, USB power supply, and USB female extension cable are articles. None of those articles changes the kit classification.
